It is entirely appropriate that the latest Shani Rhys James’ exhibition at Martin Tinney Gallery coincides with the gallery’s 25th anniversary year. Shani has been with us from the start. She first exhibited with the gallery in 1992 in a group show and has been one of our most loyal stalwarts ever since. This is her ninth solo show with the gallery and she has been in numerous exhibitions with us in Cardiff, London and abroad, notably San Francisco and Brussels.
There is a particular pleasure in seeing an artist’s career develop and progress. I am very proud that over the years Shani Rhys James has become not only one of Wales’ pre-eminent artists but one of Britain’s leading figurative artists with several major prizes to her name.
This exhibition of approximately 25 new paintings confirms her painterly, expressionist mastery. The latter in conjunction with the psychological depth of her work is a very powerful combination.
It has been a privilege to work with this wonderful artist over the past twenty-five years and I am delighted to host this latest exhibition. Thank you, Shani.
