Roger Cecil (1942 - 2015)

ROGER CECIL (1942 - 2015)

Roger Cecil was born in Abertillery in 1942 and studied at Newport College of Art and St Martin's School of Art, London.  In 1964 he won the David Murray Landscape Award from the Royal Academy, and started a course at the Royal College of Art, but soon gave it up and returned to his childhood home. He continued painting whilst also working as a labourer in local mines and building sites and later went on to spend some time teaching in Ebbw Vale.

He was often described as reclusive and he found maintaining relationships with galleries difficult despite exhibiting regularly with considerable success in Wales and London from the late 1980s until his death in 2015.
