GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT: Clive Hicks-Jenkins and the Penfold Press

8 September 2016 - 1 October 2016

Clive Hicks-Jenkins was born in 1951 in Newport. In his early career he was an actor, choreographer, director and stage designer, creating productions with leading companies in London. He moved back to Wales permanently in the late 1980’s to concentrate on his work as an artist.

Clive was winner of the Gulbenkian Welsh Art Prize in 1999, runner-up as Welsh Artist of the Year in April 2000, and in 2002 received a Creative Wales Award from the Arts Council of Wales. He became an Honorary Fellow of Aberystwyth University in 2004. He has had solo exhibitions at Martin Tinney Gallery, Newport Museum & Art Gallery, Brecknock Museum, the Museum of Modern Art Wales and Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford. His exhibitions have been reviewed in Modern Painters, Art Review, Galleries, Planet and the BBC Wales series Double Yellow. His work has also been selected for several prestigious group exhibitions, including the Royal Academy.

He has shown regularly at Martin Tinney Gallery since 1997 and has been a member of The Welsh Group for almost twenty years. In 2011 his work was celebrated in a hugely successful retrospective at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. Nicholas Usherwood in Galleries magazine has described his work as ‘reflective, expressive painting of the highest order’. Clive’s work has now been acquired by all the principal public collections in Wales and his artist’s books, including the first illustrated edition of Peter Shaffer’s Equus, are in libraries worldwide.

This latest exhibition features paintings and drawings, in addition to screenprints printed by the Penfold press, based on the theme of Gawain and the Green Knight, vividly translated for the 21st century by Simon Armitage.
