Vivienne Williams
Biography
Born 1955 in Swansea, where she now lives and works, Vivienne Williams took an M.A. in ‘ The Literary Response to the Visual Arts’ at Reading University, before travelling and teaching worldwide. In Australia between 1980 and 1982 she took drawing classes, subsequently returning to Britain to study and work at a Buddhist College until 1990. It was at this point that Vivienne became a full time artist, since when she has exhibited with increasing success.
Vivienne’s work is strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism in it’s celebratory use of colour and it’s quiet contemplative qualities. The Contemporary Art Society of Wales purchased a painting in 2003.
Vivienne says of her work:
'Colour is the most important thing in my work – in the bold and rather exuberant flower paintings and the more contemplative still life pictures of pots, bowls, jugs and fruit.
The elements within a composition are often rearranged and painted over many times. In this way layers are built up until ordinary paper takes on the appearance and weight of old leather. The surface texture is energetically worked and reworked, scratched, sanded and stained. At any moment during this process there is an opportunity for a painting to emerge.'
Bywgraffiad
Wedi'i geni yn Abertawe yn 1955, lle y mae'n byw a gweithio, ymchwiliodd Vivienne i ‘ The Literary Response to the Visual Arts’ ym Mhrifysgol Reading cyn teithio a dysgu ledled y byd. Yn Awstralia rhwng 1980 i 1982, bu'n darlunio, ac wedi dychwelyd i Brydain bu'n astudio a gweithio mewn coleg Buddhaidd tan 1990. Bryd hyn, daeth yn artist proffesiynol llawn amser, ac ers hynny, y mae wedi arddangos a gwerthu'n llwyddiannus iawn. Mae dylanwad Buddhaidd mawr ar ei gwaith, yn enwedig yn ei defnydd o liw ac awyrgylch tawel ei gwaith. Prynwyd gwaith gan Cymdeithas Cefyddyd Gyfoes yn 2003.
'Lliw yw'r elfen flaenaf yn fy ngwaith - yn y blodau cryf a'r astudiaethau bywyd llonydd tawel o ffrwythau, powleni a llestri. Mae'r elfennau o fewn gofod y llun yn cael eu symud yn aml. Trwy'r broses yma mae adeiladu heanau o baent yn creu effaith o hen ledr yn hytrach na papur fel cefndir. Mae ansawdd yr arwynebedd yn cael ei weithio eto ac eto, yn cael ei grafu a'i staenio. Drwy'r broses yma, daw cyfle i'r llun ddod i fodolaeth.'
