Born in 1933, Claudia Williams is a well-established figure on the Welsh art scene. She has now returned to live and work in Wales, having previously lived in France, where her work is also highly regarded. She was awarded the Silver Medal by The Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters, Paris in 1995 in recognition of her contribution to the Arts in France.
As a child, Claudia’s gift for draughtsmanship was evident and she won several national prizes and scholarships for her drawings. At the age of sixteen she attended Chelsea School of Art, where, again, her draughtsmanship was recognised with a scholarship. After Chelsea, she moved to north Wales to marry the artist Gwilym Prichard in 1954, and so began a remarkable shared life of painting and homemaking, bringing up their four children and exhibiting.
Claudia’s paintings and drawings have always reflected the domestic world of children and grandchildren, family gatherings and seaside trips. But she has also touched on more controversial issues, notably the drowning of Tryweryn. Her obvious love of the subject matter, allied with a rigorous eye for composition and colour, and the quality of her draughtsmanship combine to produce paintings of great integrity and broad appeal.
Claudia has exhibited widely over the past 40 years and her work is represented in many public and private collections. A hugely popular retrospective was held at the National Library of Wales in 2000. This exhibition of her most recent paintings and drawings celebrates her 75th birthday and shows her at her lively best.
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated colour catalogue, which may be ordered by contacting the gallery.
