Gwen John 1876 - 1939
Gwen John is considered to be Wales' most important 20th century artist. Born in Haverfordwest, the elder sister of Augustus John, she trained at the Slade School in London and subsequently at Whistler's School in Paris. She lived in France for the rest of her life.
There are fewer than two hundred of her paintings in existence. Famously, she repeated her compositions and limited her range of subjects, producing quiet, close-toned paintings of great beauty and emotional intensity.
Her reputation has continued to grow as her brother, Augustus, predicted: ' Fifty years after my death, I shall be remembered as Gwen John's brother'.
