Darren Hughes RCA
Born in Bangor, North Wales in 1970, Darren Hughes is one of the rising stars of Welsh painting. Following a series of increasingly successful exhibitions, the late Sir Kyffin Williams invited Darren to exhibit alongside him at Sir Kyffin’s last London show. Needless to say, the exhibition was an huge success and Darren sold every picture.This was followed by a sell-out show with us in September 2006.
‘I seek to reflect and encapsulate a sense of place and explore the structure, permanence and geometry of the landscape that immediately surrounds my house and studio in Bethesda.’
‘The work of Darren is different to that of most of his contemporaries in that he appears, truly, to love what he paints. He loves the landscape around his home in Bethesda, he loves the houses, the mountains, the gates and the stone walls and slate fences. Consequently he is able to communicate that love to others. Wedi’i eni ym Mangor, Gogledd Cymru yn 1970, mae Darren Hughes yn brysur sefydlu’i hun yn un o sêr byd peintio Cymru. O ganlyniad i gyfres o arddangosfeydd llwyddiannus, gwahoddwyd Darren gan Syr Kyffin Williams i arddangos ei waith ochr yn ochr a’i waith ei hun yn ei sioe ddiweddaraf yn Llundain. Gwerthwyd gwaith Darren i gyd â’r arddangosfa yn lwyddiant mawr.
Dywed Darren am ei waith:
‘Rydw i’n ceisio crynhoi ac adlewyrchu teimlad o ardal ac yn archwilio fframwaith, geometreg a parhâd y tirwedd o amgylch fy stiwdio a f’ nghartref ym Methesda.’
Talai Syr Kyffin Williams deyrnged iddo:
‘Mae gwaith Darren yn wahanol i’r rhan helaethaf o’i gyfoeswyr oherwydd ymaddangosai mewn cariad yn gyfan gwbl gyda’r hyn y mae’n peintio. Mae’n caru’r tirwedd o amgylch ei gartref, mae’n caru’r tai, y mynyddoedd, y gatiau, y waliau carreg a’r ffens llechi. O ganlyniad, mae’n gallu trosglwyddo a mynegi’r cariad yna trwy ei waith i eraill. Y mae hefyd yn artist talentog iawn- dylem ymfalchio ynddo.’
