Born in Aberdare in 1974, James Donovan studied at Mid-Glamorgan Centre for Art & Design and Swansea Institute of Higher Education. He is already established as one of the brightest young stars of Welsh painting. James was the recipient of the Sir Leslie Joseph Young Artist of the Year award in 1998.

The starting point for his paintings is miners’ processions that used to wind their way through the streets of the valleys’ mining villages. The historical, mythical and actual characters who made up these processions interact in his paintings to form a collection of very contemporary images which investigates the ethos of the past, present and future Welsh mining community.

Cafodd James Donovan ei eni yn Aberdare yn 1974 a’i hyfforddi yng Nghanolfan Celf a Chrefft Morgannwg Ganol ac yng Ngholeg Addysg Bellach Abertawe. Mae eisoes wedi sefydlu ei hun fel un o arlunwyr mwyaf addawol Cymru. Dyfarnwyd James gyda gwobr Sir Leslie Joseph fel arlunydd y flwyddyn yn1998, ac mae wedi cael arddangosfeydd llwyddiannus iawn yn yr oriel yma ac yn Llundain.

Y man cychwyn i ddelweddau James yw gorymdeithiau y glowyr yn ymdroelli trwy strydoedd pentrefi glofaol y cymoedd. Mae’r cryfder o arlunio a’r ansawdd enigmatig ac oriog yn amlwg yn ei arluniau. Mae'r unigolion hanesyddol, mytholegol a gwirioneddol yma yn cyfarthrebu yn ei beintiadau gan greu casgliad cyfoes sy'n archwilio ethos y gorffennol, y presenol a'r dyfodol yn y gymuned glofaol Cymreig.
