Charles Burton was born in Treherbert in 1929, and grew up in the Rhondda Fawr between the wars. By his early twenties his work was being bought by public institutions and important private collectors, and he won the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod when he was only 25. At Cardiff College of Art in the late 1940s he was at the heart of the Rhondda Group, alongside his friends Ernie Zobole and Glyn Morgan.  After post-graduate studies at the Royal College he became a teacher. He was Head of Painting at Liverpool College of Art, and then from 1970 to his retirement, Head of Art and Design at the Polytechnic of Wales.

He has always been a very private painter. Like many of the artists we value most, he has painted not for an audience, but for himself.  He has embraced many subjects: landscapes, still-lifes, interiors, figures, but his works are unified in painterly balance of pictorial space and in the love that they express. They need a kind of reverie to be absorbed. So quietly perfect are they that they may be lost to those who hurry for an instant impact. But look hard and long, and they will never lose their value.

Yn ôl

Ganwyd Charles Burton yn Nhreherbert yn 1929, a magwyd ef yn y Rhondda Fawr. Erbyn ei ugeiniau roedd ei gelf yn cael ei brynnu gan athrofeydd cyhoeddus a chasglwyr preifat, ac enillodd fedal Aur Celfyddyd Gain yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol pan oedd ond 25. Yng ngholeg Celf Caerdydd yn y 1940au, ef oedd yng nghanol y 'Rhondda Group', yngyd a Ernie Zobole a Glynn Morgan. Wedi astudiaethau pellach yn y Coleg Brenhinol, bu'n athro. Charles oedd pennaeth yr adran peintio yng ngholeg Celf Lerpwl, ac yna, o 1970 hyd ei ymddeoliad, pennaeth Celf a Chunllunio yn Polytechnic Cymru.

Mae Charles yn beintiwr preifat iawn ac yn peintio i blesio'i hun, nid i blesio ryw gynulleidfa. Defnyddia nifer o destynnau: tirluniau, bywyd- llonydd, ffigyrau a chelfi, ond mae ei waith yn gydbwysedd o ofod dilys a'r cariad a ddaw o'i destyn. Yn dawel a llonydd, nid yw ei waith i'r rhai sy'n chwilio am effaith mawr, unionsyth; ond wrth edrych yn ofalus, ni chollir dim o'u gwerth.
