A self-taught artist, Nick Evans started painting in his late sixties after a career within the coal industry of South Wales. His subject of Welsh miners, depicted in their state of physical exhaustion, blackened by coal dust, draw and gaunt, struggling under the hard working conditions of the pits is executed with realism and truth without a hint of sentimental lustre.
Often religious in aspects, Evan's subject matter of miners, their tools and apparel, pit-ponies and machinery are painted in hues of black grey and white applied by fingers and rags directly onto the surface.
Although he did not exhibit until this seventies, Evan's representation of the physical and spiritual hardship of Welsh miners, iconic in feel, capture a national interest and wide acclaim.
Because of his late start as an artists his work is rare and much sought-after.
